This year, from late April through May, Greg and I will be visiting England, Scotland and Wales, travelling from Land’s End to John o’Groats.
Thirty years ago, in 1989, when we last visited the United Kingdom, we knew very little about our family history. I remember driving in Cornwall past a sign pointing to St Erth. Greg said that he thought some of his forebears came from there. We didn’t take the road, however, for at that time these and other family history connections meant very little to us.
For our trip this year I want to be better prepared. We will be visiting many places where our forebears lived and I hope this contributes to our knowledge of our family history.
During April I will be writing about the places we plan to visit and our family’s connections to them.

I was just watching a YouTube video last night about a lady in Land’s End who lives in a World War II bunker.
Never been to the U. K.,, unless you count flying over it on way to other places. My paternal grandfather’s line is supposed to be from England although I am stuck as my earliest male ancestor on that line was a John Smith, one of six in that line.

Thanks for visiting. Imaginative middle names can help with John Smiths and similar names but too often they were not blessed with these. I am hoping that DNA will help to identify the family of my husband’s 3rd great grandfather George Young.

We will be leaving the UK on 8th May for sunnier climates but if you are in Surrey and wish to visit the former home of Emilia Wade and Philip Champion de Crespigny before that date, please email me! Nicky

Thanks so much Nicky. I am writing about William Wade, Emilia’s father, and his time in Bath. Unfortunately our plans are to be in Surrey probably later in the trip.

This sounds like an interesting A-Z and even more so because it is a preparation for you trip. I’m hoping to visit my home places sometime soon, but they are both within a few hours drive from here. I would have gone more often if I didn’t have to go through the horrendous Atlanta traffic to get there.

People are warning us about horrendous traffic in the UK too. I suspect we are a bit spoilt in Australia. I hope I am not being too ambitious. I am finding the preparation useful at tempering my expectations and knowing what I am looking for and might find. Just discovered a fine military barracks from the nineteenth century associated with one of my 3rd great grandfathers was demolished in 1968 and now replaced by Sainsburys supermarket!

These are places I really love (though I’m from a very different place). I’ll love to read about it.

This is my first year with this challenge and I found finding a theme a bit difficult. I think your idea is great and I might use that next year – but for locations in Denmark where I am from 😃
